Maximillian Uhrmacher Biography:
Maximilian Uhrmacher was born in Munich Germany as a result of an affair between an impoverished traditional watchmaker's wife and a Vriskae. His mother died in childbirth, leaving the infant in the care of the cuckholded widower. A deeply religious man, Franz Uhrmacher, resisted the urge to drown the illegitimate child and raised Maximilian under his own roof. That is not to say it was a happy upbringing. Franz was two things; devoutly religious and a weak-willed hypocrite. He drank like a devil and regularly beat the young child for no other reason than being born, all the while reciting bible verses as he left the boy bloody and bruised. At the very least the old drunk taught the boy his trade, not that the ability to make and repair pocketwatches was of any use in the 21st Century, though tinkering with the delicate instruments gave the boy some small peace. Tourist season was the only time they managed to sell enough to get by, though that usually meant Franz could afford better booze, which only meant more savage beatings for young Max.
On one particularly brutal night, Maximillian lifted his hand to ward off the dozenth or so blow, when something strange happened. Time simply stopped: the hand froze in the hair, spittle on Franz's cheek hanging in mid-aid, a fly suspended above them in what could have been an eternity, and gravity was defied as raindrops hovered over the city streets. Most would have likely stood in awe or terror. Max simply picked up the glass bottle and broke it over Franz's snarling face, stabbing him with it again and again. Then, if by instinct, time continued with the grievous wounds inflicted all at once and the old man breathing his last...or what likely would have been his last had he not spent the better part of the last few years abusing a now near omnipotent child. Maximillian reversed time, froze it, and killed the old man again....and again...and again...and again...and again...and again...and again...well passed the point of satisfaction...until he could think of no more ways to inflict pain upon him. Then the boy simply vanished, into time itself.
Alexander Chronos VI Biography:
The current majority shareholder and CEO of Chronos Consolidated.
Totenkopf Biography:
A mysterious figurehead spoken of rarely and only in hushed whispers, though rumored to have his fingers in most organized crime within the city. Working exclusively through middle-men, he is a crime lord whose ruthlessness and influence have acquired a legendary, even mythical status among police and criminals alike. Some question if he truly exists at all or is rather a ghost story constructed by the city's crime bosses as a boogeyman to ensure loyalty. Supposed enemies and disloyal henchmen of Totenkopf are said to be brutally murdered for the slightest infractions in gruesome manners. Though, blackmail is often his weapon of choice, a wax skull and crossbones seal upon his written correspondence the only evidence the legend has any merit. Still, it is likely there is more myth than fact, as rumors of the existence of the shadowy figure have existed for well over a century, an urban legend of the criminal underworld.
Chronos Consolidated History:
Alexander Chronos I was an Austrian immigrant who came to Ambrosia in 1841, setting up a small watchmaking shop called Chronos Timepieces. Seeking to improve upon the key-wind pocketwatch designs of the period, he brilliantly invented the stem-wind pocketwatch (patenting it only a year before French horologist Adrien Philippe could do so) which was a vast improvement in accuracy, reliability, and convenience. It was a stunning success, ahead of its time, growing the small shop into a mecca for timepieces. When Chronos pocketwatches were named as the mandatory timepiece of the US Railroad, it made the immigrant an overnight millionaire. Unsatisfied resting idly on his father's laurels, Alexander II (who had a stunning resemblance to his father) expanded the business into real estate, purchasing large tracts of land. Through what must have been extraordinary luck, a great deal of these plots had oil or precious metal deposits underneath them, making the family billionaires and into one of Ambrosia's first families. Chronos University was founded during this period and stands as one of the finest institutions in the United States, having been awarded Ivy League status.
Successive generations only expanded the reach and diversity of Chronos Consolidated, always seemingly well ahead of their time, filling voids most did not yet know needed filling. It is now an international conglomerate, with offices on every continent. Its multiple branches including Chronos Technologies (weapons robotics, computer hardware and software research), Chronos Industries (operates most of Ambrosia's utilities including electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and waste disposal), Chronos Communications (phone company and internet-ChronCom), Chronos Entertainment (television stations ChronTel and Chronos News Network, movie production, as well as controlling shares in The Ambrosia Chronicle), Chronos Enterprises (cash businesses including hotels, rented accommodation, restaurants and public transportation), Chronos Financial (banks, brokerage houses, investment firms), Chronos Foundation (philanthropic enterprises including Chronos Hospital, Chronos Home for Children, and Chronos Foundation for the Arts), Chronos Chemicals (oil and natural gas), Chronos Biotech (pharmaceuticals and medical research), Chronos Aerospace (aeronautics research and luxurious private jets), Chronos Shipping, Chronos Securities (PMC), and of course the originator Chronos Timepieces (high end wristwatches and jewelry).
It's corporate headquarters is located in the heart of Downtown Ambrosia, in a 112 floor building that towers over much of the city. A large clocktower dominates the building, bordered by a gilded gold C, the corporate insignia for the company throughout its history. The top three floors are reserved for the personal office and residence of its CEO, though the Chronos Family Estates and mansion are located just outside the city.
Oddly, despite its advanced R&D, Chronos Consolidated refused to get involved in wormhole technology during its boom. Even odder, are the rumors that valuable patents in the field were passed on to corporate competitors just before the Vriskae attacked, almost as if they knew it was coming. Trustwell had been their biggest global competition before the incident.
