The University of Ambrosia was founded in 1810 by Ambrose Oakmont himself, though his daughter Tabitha Oakmont-Walters is historically considered the college's true patron. It was her efforts throughout the 19th century that garnered the school's prestige as a safe haven for academic thinking ahead of its time. It is often cited as one of the very first higher education facilities to allow blacks and women to attend for traditionally masculine fields, and thus has a very long and intricate relationship with civil rights movements. One president, four vice presidents, eighteen senators, and thirty house representatives have attended UA.

This weekend, the University is hosting an international seminar on physics. There have been lectures on quantum entanglement theory, perturbation theory, practical applications of relativity, phantom energy, Dyson's eternal intelligence, and other such mundane topics. Only one person has discussed Einsten-Rosen bridges, (or 'wormholes') but his primary focus is on how those breakthroughs relate to the future of game theory.
Today, Hans Willingham himseld will broach that subject. The programme simply describes the topic as 'The Multiverse and Man.' He will be speaking outdoors because the auditorium is simply not large enough for everyone wishing to meet one of the man who helped discover other Earths. Major local figures like Mayor Hannibal Barker, Col. Sam Rodgers, (in service dress) Trustwell's Lionel Hargrave, and Alexander Chronos VI are expected to be present for this his hstoric event. None of the 'Fathers of Inderdimensional Travel' have ever spoken out in a such a public American forum since before the Reighn.
The University Chancellor, Nigel Oakmont, will be officiating the proceedings and greeting guests personally.

He lead her to a snack table. "I am not sure... originally, Doctor Yorick Vaughan was the guest speaker, and Vaughan had close ties to both UA and Trustwell, who helped set all this up. He passed away a few weeks ago though, so it appears they transported Willingham here from Europe so they could save face. I've never met either, but I studied their work decades aho. Most of it went over my head, even though I was on the Dean's List. Men like Vaughan and Willingham are magicians, not scientists. The rest of us were just playing connect-the-dot."
Nerd.

Erwin poured himself an orange juice very slowly, for fear of getting a drop on his suit. "Well, see, that's the twist. Vaughan was a Trustwell employee and kept his mouth shut after they started the War of the Worlds. Willingham's a free agent though, and did mostly contract work for research labs in Europe. He hates Trustwell. His last bestseller was titled Trust Not." He sipped the juice. "So where does this fascination with spacemen come from, Elize?"

Erwin laughed. "I was talking about the physicists!" He grinned and shook his head. "You have a beautiful voice. Not just the accent, but how your curiosity shines through. Much of this has become very humdrum for Ambrosians, and Americans in general. I think, if you had million dollars, you could actually make a difference somewhere."

"How much money would it take to feed someone who cannot qualify for food stamps? Unfortunately, Chronos's policies are in line with the government's. Starcrown Heights may as well be Guantanamo Bay for the foreseeable future. It's a sad fact, but its the price of business. Still... Einstein said that the important thing is not to stop questioning."

"'And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.' Thus the Bible describes the children of angels." Erwin found the mini-mushroom quiche caps with much delight. "Crises of faith are as much cultural as personal. Did we survive the Tribulation, or is it yet to come? Many American churches are still livid they might have missed the rapture. Perhaps it is the best these people not spend too much time in Stacrown..."

Post by Alexander Chronos VI on Nov 3, 2015 23:30:40 GMT
Alexander Chronos VI arrived outside the lecture hall via limousine, doing his best to smile and wave at the flurry of flashbulbs from the gathered press, all vying for a shot of one of the enigmatic international mogul's rare public appearances. He held himself in well in a bespoke Kiton tuxedo that cost more than the average Ambrosian made in a year, yet he did not look overly comfortable in the limelight. It was a stark contrast from his "grandfather" Alexader Chronis IV, who had spent more time in Hollywood financing pictures on behalf of the fledgling Chronos Entertainment, cavorting with actresses, and philandering than seeing to business affairs in Ambrosia. He had actually come home to Ambrosia with a California bride, his 7th and last marriage, a mediocre actress and celebrated pinup. The only similarity between the two men, besides the shared name, was their eerie similarities in appearance. If not for IV's Clark Gable moustache, which was all the rage at the time, they could have been twins.
But I digress. As Alexander VI helped a woman out of the limousine, it was clear he had finally found a companion for the evening. Unsurprisingly enough for a man that spent more time in his company headquarters than estate, he had chosen his PA Diana Kairos. The way he looked at it, this way he could work and play at the same time; make his obligatory public appearance while dictating the occasional memo and shuffling around his schedule. Besides that, she cleaned up well. Despite the rather generous salary he already paid her, he had provided her with a sizable stipend to procure clothing and jewelry befitting an evening with Ambrosia's elite.

Diana barely even noticed the cameras, which was good as when they found out she was just his PA they ignored her almost completely. To say she was at home in the spotlight though was an understatement, she'd taken her shoes off and was relaxing on the spotlights sofa watching one of Chronos Entertainments awful shows. She simply did not care.
Which is not to say she did not take pride in reputation or appearance, she did, she was just so relaxed around cameras, even though she did not come into that much contact with them.
To that effect she was wearing a low cut halter neck dress in navy blue which came to just above her knees and a diamond necklace that looked a little bit like snowflakes.
As soon as Chronos helped her out of the limo, she was on her eyeglass, scrolling through her bosses appointments tomorrow to see if anyone on the guest list was supposed to be on his schedule, after all, best to try directing him towards them for a premature ice breaker before trying to schmooze with potentials.
She waited a moment for the press to take a few photographs, then moved in front of them to block their view somewhat to link her arm with her employer so they could enter quickly, to minimise his discomfort and get on with business.

One young man with an ungroomed goatee pushed his way to the front of the crowd. "Mister Chronos! Paul Cobb, Wolf's Howl! Your family has been in Ambrosia for two hundred years, yet despite your vast wealth, you have made no effort to improve living conditions in Starcrown, nor drawn attention to the obvious corruption and bigotry at City Hall! How do you respond to accusationss that Chronos Consolidated has abandoned its home city?!"

"Scores of proposals from various charities are submitted to the Chronos Foundation every day, all worthwhile and all in need of funding. While our charitable contributions each year are sizable, in order to ensure the greatest good for the most people is accomplished I find it best to direct the funds towards helping Ambrosia's citizens." he replied, placing emphasis on the word citizen as if to imply the obvious connotation that the Starborn were something else, flashing a winning smile despite his desire to throttle the reporter. It was bad enough he had to stomach an evening at the University of Ambrosia without upturning his nose at the second most prestigious university in the city. He would be hard-pressed to tolerate an interview from a gossip rag as well. "As for the the matter of City Hall, I am afraid I have no comment on its current state, other than to urge voters to acquire their political opinions from a reputable news source. My family may have helped build this city, but is the responsibility of an informed electorate to chart its course."

Erwin listened intently to her story of Preto. He had great empathy for a man whose profession embodied ruthlessness. "Those poor people... I wish I could say I could not imagine such a thing... but here we are today."
Distracted by Chronos' arrival , he answered her question with, "Not so much. He's a very private man. His father was too, though I didn't really know him." Price finished the hors d'ourve and carefully wiped his hands. "I'll introduce you." He lead his date towards the mogul and his assistant. "Mister Chronos. This is Miss Elize Groeneveld, our corporate yoga instructor. Magdelene sends her best from Washington." He pronounced Elize's surname perfectly. "Miss Kairos, I hope you're well."

"No more questions," Diana said abruptly when Chronos finished talking, only leaving it that late because he'd started talking, she felt like she'd missed a cue.
"Mr Chronos' is very busy and his office gives interview by appointment only to reputable news outlets, and PR release daily public statements on questions posed." She stressed the word reputable, "in order to be given an appointment, please ring this number," she handed the man a slip of paper, if he rang it it was to Chronos Universities English studies, with an extension to their journalism department.
While she was speaking, she stood in front of her employer, giving him time to move on if he wished.
When Erwin approached to introduced his guest, she took a moment to respond, holding up a hard to tell him to give her a moment, "sir your 2 o'clock tomorrow has been forced to push it back until 2:15. I told them 2 was the commitment and that you do not run in their time,"
After that she turned to Price properly, " Mr Price, excited about the lecture?"

Ewan arrived at the University through one of the other entrances to avoid the crowd, a habit he had picked up while travelling with his mother. He had had to purchase a suit for the event, and felt out of place in it, also looking exactly how he felt. He could not deny a feeling of anticipation for the event, and was curious to see how the information he had leaked would go down here, and in the city at large.

Erwin Price took it in stride. The man had the affability of Buddha on Zoloft. "Of course. I was just telling Miss Groeneveld what a science nerd I was before I went into accounting."
Nigel Oakmont approached the party, looking more like an aging movie star than a university chancellor. "A pleasure to see our eternal rivals represented here!"
The Oakmonts were 'old money' and had longstanding investments from the original railroads to the microchip to the wormhole manipulator. Today, they had controlling interests in Trustwell, Microsoft, Disney, and Exxon. But they were hardly captains of industry, simply savvy investors with old accounts. They were not so much powerful, as merely wealthy in a way that redefined 'free labor.'
Nigel himself was one of the very few Oakmonts with something even resembling a job, and even the chancellorship of UA was just a formal position trotted out for special occasions.
