Externally Ewan acted as if that was the question he meant to ask, though internally he could not help but add the misinterpretation to his analysis of her. "Pleased to meet you Lucy, I'm Ewan" He said, offering his hand.

She curtsied like someone who has seen Mary Poppins too many times, even including the bad Cockney accent. "Charmed, milord!"

Nigel Oakmont snorted. "Your chief scientist is an AU alumnus, is he not? How are you appreciating the education and facilities he enjoys as an old Wolf?" It was true, though Banner and Griswold were Chronos graduates themselves. Griswold had even had a decent college football career with the Watchmen before an injury took him out, and both had given more than a few graduation ceremony speeches over the years. "Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn on occasion, no?" he asked, tone dry. "Either way, I am certain it only makes him appreciate his new facilities and resources all the more. Better a rising star than a sinking ship." he slighted Trustwell.

Nigel Oakmont INT: 6
Nigel thinks the slight is intended at his family, not Trustwell.
"Ooh, that's clever. Very pithy, Mister Chronos. I met your dad once, when I was in college, and you know, he used the exact same line to my father. And you know what my father said? He said, at least when a ship sinks, it only takes the crew down with it." Then he walked off to find someone to brag to about outwitting a Chronos.

This time Ewan cringed visibly. "I'm not sure if I should laugh or be offended by that" he said, managing a slight chuckle.

Is that better? ,Chronos thought to him as the Oakmont walked away. If and when I fall, why should anything be left at all?
He had ensured that each and every Chronos outlived their Oakmont counterpart, often considering simply eradicating the line throughout the years. But it was far more amusing to leave them just below him, reaching for the prestige they once enjoyed from his shadow, a fall from grace that would have never happened without his existence. Funding Trustwell had been an investment in their own irrelevance.

This time Ewan cringed visibly. "I'm not sure if I should laugh or be offended by that" he said, managing a slight chuckle. "What? Dick van Dyke is hilarious! Much better than the books!" She looked over intently something. "Come on, let's pretend you're important! I'm starving and the VIPs are hogging the platter!" Then she grabbed his arm and dragged him towards the more esteemed area.

Ewan preferred not to spend time around the social elite, he personally found they think too highly of themselves. However he had spent time around many of them, and knew quite a few faces. "I suppose I can pretend if need be"

One of those faces was Dr. Clive Maxwell, a local physician had once hired Ewan to recover his daughter Bessie after she was kidnapped by his ex-wife. It was not one of his most difficult cases, but it had been an emotional one.
"Ewan!" He called out, and made his way towards the detective.
"Oh wow, you are famous!" whispered Lucy excitedly on his arm.
"Ewan Cromwell! Such a pleasure to see you again!"

"Famous is a strong word" Ewan said to Lucy before addressing Maxwell "Dr Maxwell, nice to see you too, how is Bessie doing" he said as he came over.

Nigel Oakmont, Chancellor, approached the podium and spoke into the microphone. "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Dr. Willingham will begin his presentation in ten minutes, and the university asks that, though it is a beautiful night, the drinks are free, and the company is pleasant, everyone please endeavor to show common courtesy to the professor and to the other guests. This is his first visit back to America in many years, and the University of Ambrosia is especially proud to host this historic occasion. The University thanks you fir your support and attendance."

Lionel Hargrave finished his chat with Mayor Barker and texted 'Veronica' to see if she had arrived yet. He stood by the drinks and pours himself one last martini before the show..

Not long after he sent the text "Veronica" arrived, she wore a deep crimson asymmetrical dress with silver jewellery, her hair was half up, but her bangs kept longer to frame her face.
"Sorry I am a bit late, I got stuck across town." She said in way of greeting.

He gave her a quick peck on the lips. "Fear not. Still a few minutes left." He handed her a drink. "You look lovely, as expected."

"Thank you, so do you," she replied, smiling at him and accepting the drink, then linked arms with him, "Who was that you were speaking to?" she asked him, looking back at the mayor. She knew of course, but she was supposed to be new to the town, it was something someone who had been here a few days might not know. She linked arms with him so they could find their seats.
